Public libraries play a critical role in promoting literacy in their communities. By making available resources to educate parents on how they can get involved in the education of their children, as well as training for parents, and interactive literacy activities for parents and their children, libraries can help to strengthen the parents' role as the primary teacher for their children, and assist them in becoming full partners in their child's education.
Through the NJPIRC Library Based Parent Involvement and Family Literacy Projects Initiative, 15 New Jersey libraries have received funding to develop or expand a special collection of books and media resources on parent involvement and to host an events designed to help families become involved in their child's education and rise to the challenge of raising healthy, happy and literate children. Since 2007, NJPIRC partner libraries have purchased over 1400 books, videos, games and other media on parent involvement in education!
